Draw controls gave us a problem vs. Top 15 teams last season
Tristan McGinley seemed to get better as the season progressed. Sung switched over from Crooks to Petty vs. JMU. Crooks did most of them today. JMU had a 6'0" player and Colorado had a 5'10" player. Crooks is 5'7" and Petty is 5'6". McGinley was 6'1".
As for speed, Tech started out playing fast vs. JMU but JMU's defense created problems. I was impressed by JMU's defense. I don't know how UNC scored 18 goals vs. them. JMU's head coach has been building that program for 13 years. She has a lot of talent. Sung has 2 recruiting classes on the team with 10 of his recruits (3 freshmen and 7 sophomores) starting. I like Nelson and Goodwin. Lohrer and Tilley will be good players along with Crooks and Lubnow. Paige Petty may be the best player in our program's history (which honestly isn't saying much at this point in Tech WLAX history). I like the recruiting class coming in next fall. Even with that said, our recruiting doesn't compare with the blue bloods of women's lacrosse or some of the other Top 20 programs. John Sung is a good coach and a good evaluator of talent. He simply needs more time. He has been recruiting more athletic players but I agree that we don't have enough of them right now to be playing for conference championships. I am disappointed by the team's effort today. How much of it was mental (from the JMU loss) is unknown but it seemed like Colorado once again demoralized us early like they did last season in Boulder and we just never got into the flow offensively or defensively. This team has lost some confidence since the second half of the JMU game. Maybe expectations were set too high? Maybe Sung needs to go back to his 2017 plans since he basically has a new team in 2019 with 10 underclassmen starters? The difference between now and 2017 is that he has more talent now but less experience. [Post edited by Old Line Hokie at 02/17/2019 12:17AM]
